Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux
Cursillo Weekends
The H/T Diocesan Cursillo Weekends are held at Lumen Christi Retreat Center in the Souby building. Please pray about attending a Cursillo Weekend, for you can only attend a Cursillo Weekend once in your lifetime. The three-day Cursillo is a personal encounter with Christ—a weekend just for you and our Lord. The Cursillo Weekends are cloistered weekends enabling you to focus your time and energy on the special encounter you may have with Christ.
Who may attend a Cursillo Weekend?
Cursillo Weekends are open to all adults who can receive the sacraments of the Catholic Church, and who are ready to learn and to grow through worship, study and fellowship. Cursillo Weekends are held separately for men and women. Each participant (candidate) requires a sponsor who has made a Cursillo Weekend. You may contact us if you need a sponsor.
What to expect at a Cursillo Weekend
A priest and/or deacon or nun along with a team of lay individuals will be present for the weekend. The Cursillo Weekend consists of 15 talks (Rollos) and five meditations, Way of the Cross, Sacrament of Reconciliation, Eucharist, Adoration and much more that will bring you closer to Christ. Each day of the Cursillo Weekend begins with morning prayers and ends with night prayers. Mass is celebrated each day except the Thursday.
The Cursillo Weekend starts the Thursday evening. It begins with an overview of the Weekend. This night is the retreat phase of the Cursillo Weekend with the Way of The Cross and meditations of getting to know yourself.
The Friday, each participant and team member is assigned into groups that are called decurias. The Friday is to help participants (candidates) focus on understanding one’s self and to help them discover what motivates them in different situations. During this day, there will be five talks (Rollos). Two will be given by the Spiritual Directors and three are given by the lay individuals. The talks (Rollos) are built on each other each day and after each talk (Rollo) is followed by small group discussions within your decuria.
The Saturday focuses on the participants (candidates) understanding the current relationship they have with God (an encounter with Christ) and wanting a deeper relationship with Him. During this day, there will be five talks (Rollos). Two will be given by the Spiritual Directors and three are given by the lay individuals.
The Sunday focuses on the participants (candidates) having a deeper encounter with others in the Cursillo through Group Reunion and to learn how to influence their environment through living a life of grace. During this day, there will be five talks (Rollos). One will be given by the Spiritual Directors and four are given by the lay individuals. The Cursillo Weekend ends with a Closing (Clausura) with the Cursillo Community welcoming the participants (candidates) into the Cursillo Movement. The Community has been a spiritual support throughout the Weekend. During the Closing, the participants (candidates) enter the Cursillo Community. The participants’ (candidates’) families are invited to the Closing.
The Cursillo Movement is a personal encounter with Jesus Christ and takes its approach through evangelization. The Cursillo Movement seeks to evangelize the environment by evangelizing individuals. If you are looking for a deeper commitment to your faith and to understand the mission you are called to through your baptism, then Cursillo is for you!
